Sometimes, even flowers are ignored.

Sometimes they are less understood.

Sometimes their value goes unnoticed.

I really don't know how I didn’t notice them, how I never tried to understand their culinary uses, and how I could ignore the nutritional value of these flowers.

Yes, I am talking about the natural blooms of Moringa Oleifera.

Moringa Oleifera is a drought-resistant tree native to India and Southeast Asia. It is called the miracle tree as every part of the tree, including its flowers, is highly edible. Moringa Oleifera is known as moringa, drumstick tree, and malunggay.

Benefits of Moringa Flowers.

Moringa Flowers are rich in vitamins, especially vitamin C, and minerals like calcium, potassium, and iron. It is very good for digestive health and bone health. It has anti-inflammatory properties, and it is a good source of plant protein. They are steeped in teas to cleanse the body and in stir-fries.

Moringa Poo Poriyal/ Moringa Flower Stir fry.

1 tbsp vegetable oil/ Coconut oil

¼ tsp mustard seeds

¼ tsp cumin seeds

¼ cup small onions/ shallots sliced

3 sliced green chillies

2 or 3 tbsp desiccated coconut

100gms moringa flowers( cleaned)

Method.

1. Take a frying pan, add mustard seeds once the oil is hot.

2. Add cumin seeds once mustard seeds splutter

3. Add sliced onions and saute them till translucent, add green chillies.

4. Add Moringa flowers and stir fry in a low flame for 5 minutes

5. Add a pinch of salt for taste

6. Add desiccated coconut and stir fry for another 5 minutes on a low to medium flame.
